Depending on the Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is a person. He is not an “it” or something. He is God! The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

When we depend on the Holy Spirit, we are walking with him. He speaks, commands, intercedes for, hears, guides, teaches, reminds, and strengthens us. God wants us to stay close to him!

Relying on the Holy Spirit means accepting our inherent inability to live a Christian life without him; it’s recognizing that our progress comes from his work in every aspect of our lives—our thoughts, words, and actions. You cannot live the Christian life without depending on the Holy Spirit.

If we had to depend on our own strength to live the Christian life, we would fail. Upon salvation, he comes to live within us through the Holy Spirit, enabling us to turn to him for the strength we need.

How to Rely on the Holy Spirit? Start by surrendering your life to God and yielding to the Holy Spirit’s guidance, acknowledging your limitations and inviting him to take control.

Establish a consistent practice of prayer, seeking his presence and guidance daily; talking to the Holy Spirit about everything, whether it is about something big or small. Your prayers don’t need to be fancy. It’s okay to speak to him just like you would with a friend. He wants a relationship with us, and he loves hearing from us.

Make reading your bible a daily habit. To help you remember, try leaving it out somewhere you’ll easily see it. You can also leave a reminder note or set an alert on your phone or calendar. Be consistent by choosing a specific time of day that works for you, and designate a quiet spot where you can focus on your reading. This will help strengthen your relationship with him.

Building relationships within a Christian community is important because it will strengthen your faith. When you spend time together with other believers, it creates an environment in which the Holy Spirit’s presence is felt.

So, who is the Holy Spirit? He’s God, the third person of the Trinity; your constant companion, and the source of everything you need for a Christian life. Trying to navigate life’s challenges on your own won’t work. It’s all about relying completely on him – acknowledging your limitations and allowing him to guide your thoughts, words, and actions. By embracing your need for him, establishing a regular habit of prayer, reading the bible and fellowship with other Christians; you will build a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit and discover the life God desires for you.
